Being a teen can be harder than many people think. Stress and pressure can come from many different places…school, parent, work, friends. Even though it is normal to experience some stress, it can sometimes be hard to deal when it comes from so many sources all at once. Overwhelming stress can affect your sleep, your school performance, your self esteem…it can even effect how you interact with other people. In some cases, excess stress can even lead to serious mental health issues including depression, thoughts of suicide, cutting, or eating disorders.

So how do you deal with stress?

First, it is important to remember that you are not alone. There are multiple places that can offer help. Start with talking to a teacher, family member, or other trusted adult.

Second, if you don’t feel comfortable doing that, try contacting 1-800-TLC-TEEN (peer to peer teen help), 1-800-SUICIDE, or 1-800-DON’T-CUT. All offer free and confidential help.

At the Peace Dale Library, we’ll be highlighting Mental Health Awareness Month in several ways. Visit our website or check out our display for new booklists and stories about teens who are also dealing with a variety of mental health issues.

We also want your ideas on how you cope when you are feeling a little stressed. Do you do something active to get your mind off what’s bothering you? Do you do something nice for someone else? Add your own ideas here or to our bulletin board in the Teen Area of the Peace Dale Library. See what others have to say!
