The 7th & 8th Grade Guys Read Book Club will be meeting on Thursday, February 2nd, from 4-4:45 p.m. to discuss Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve:

* In the distant future, when cities move about and consume smaller towns, a fifteen-year-old apprentice is pushed out of London by the man he most admires and must seek answers in the perilous Out-Country, aided by one girl and the memory of another.

Books are available in advance at the Peace Dale Library; new members are always welcome!

Anime/Manga Club

Like manga and anime? Students in grades 6 and up are invited to the Anime/Manga Club. We meet twice a month on Fridays to watch anime episodes (such as Black Cat, Tsubasa and others!) as well as draw, discuss favorite manga series and other activities! Our next meetings are on January 6th from 3:30-4:30 p.m. and January 20th from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Help plan what we should watch and do at future meetings! Snacks will be served.

The 7th & 8th Grade Guys Read Book Club will be meeting on January 5th from 4-4:45 p.m. at the Peace Dale Library to discuss I Am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil and I Want to Be Your Class President by Josh Leib:

* In Omaha, Nebraska, Oliver Watson has everyone convinced that he’s extremely stupid and lazy, but he’s actually a very wealthy, evil genius, and when he decides to run for seventh-grade class president, nothing will stand in his way.

Holiday Treat Making

Students in grades 7 and up are invited on Wednesday, December 7th from 3:30-5:00 p.m. to create holiday treats! Chocolate dipped pretzels, homemade hot chocolate mix and other tasty creations! Perfect to give as a gift (or just enjoy them yourself!).

The 7th & 8th Grade Guys Read Book Club will be meeting on Thursday, December 1st from 4-4:45 p.m. to discuss Trash by Andy Mulligan.

In an unnamed Third World country, in the not-so-distant future, three “dumpsite boys” make a living picking through the mountains of garbage on the outskirts of a large city. One unlucky-lucky day, Raphael finds something very special and very mysterious. So mysterious that he decides to keep it, even when the city police offer a handsome reward for its return. That decision brings with it terrifying consequences, and soon the dumpsite boys must use all of their cunning and courage to stay ahead of their pursuers. It’s up to boys who have no education, no parents, no homes, and no money-to solve the mystery and right a terrible wrong.

Teen Read Week Book Quote Art Contest
Open to Grades 7 and up!

Have a favorite teen book quote?
Like art or technology?

Celebrate Teen Read Week by creating an original picture or digital collage using the quote!

Submissions will be accepted September 7th-October 20th and will be on display for voting at the Peace Dale Library. Prizes will be awarded!

The Details:
*Entrants must be in Grades 7-12
*Entries must be no larger than 8 1/2 x 11 inches
*All work must be original and not violate copyright laws and contain appropriate language
*You may submit your entry two ways:

* Drop off your entry and fill out an entry blank at the Peace Dale Library
* Email your entry in an image file (.jpg or .gif) to bkenyon@skpl.org

*Emailed entries should include: name, grade, phone number, book title, book author and page the quote can be found. By emailing your entry, you are agreeing that the work is original and doesn’t violate copyright laws. Emailed entries will be printed for display in the library.

Teen Book Review-To Kill A Mockingbird

To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

The book To Kill A Mockingbird was recommended to me by a teacher. When I started to read the book, I felt that it represented a specific time in which events were happening which changed society into what we see today. this book is about a family in Alabama who sees many actions that would be unacceptable today. It is about the father who is a lawyer who defends a black man who claims he is innocent. This book is about human nature towards those who are different. When a child even understands that segregation is wrong it shows that it is best to end it.

This book to me proves that even though someone may look different, it doesn’t mean they are on the inside. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books.

Teen Book Review-Girl Goddess #9

Girl Goddess #9 by Francesca Lia Block

Girl Goddess #9 is a collection of short stories written by Francesca Lia Block. It had a few more interesting stories (and when I say more interesting, I mean the halfway decent ones of the collection). It has some surprisingly inappropriate content throughout the book (drugs, sex, under-aged drinking); but I also didn’t think the writing was very good either. I would not recommend this book to others because of the constant inappropriate content and the writing.

However, I thought that one particular story had an excellent plot. It was called “Dragons in Manhattan”. “Dragons in Manhattan” was about a young girl who travels to find her real father because she realizes she can’t biologically have two mothers. But as I said before, the plot was good but the writing wasn’t very good.
